NYC Trip In Review

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Thanks to everybody for making this year’s alternative spring break the best. trip. ever.     Thanks to Dayna our trip leader and our wonderful hosts in New York, we spent a week serving the poor and homeless in New York City.  We delivered meals to rich and poor apartments from New Jersey to Brooklyn with God’s Love We Deliver.  We served meals (and moved food, and cleaned up afterwards) at Trinity Lower East Side, Holy Apostles, and the Catholic Worker House, and we hugged kids and helped with homework at Transfiguration Lutheran in the Bronx.   We got to explore the city, watch KU basketball at the Village Pourhouse, and meet up with Victoria, a trip veteran, at Rice to Riches.    From walking the Brooklyn Bridge to sweeping the floor, more pictures are availablehere and on Facebook. (Nobody was hurt on the trip.  His shoulder was already busted.  Really. ).

Allen Fieldhouse Clean Up Thank You!!!!

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Thanks to the more than 60 people who helped sweep, mop, leafblow, and sweep again at Allen Fieldhouse after both the men’s (Colorado) and women’s (Mizzou) games on Saturday.  Thanks to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans too for donating matching funds for the cleanup.   These funds support next month’s  alternative spring break mission trip to New York City!    The cleanup was a lot of hard work, but there were highlights along the way:  stretching with Emma, trash dunking with Darren, discovering nacho cheese doesn’t sweep well, a midnight breakfast at 4 a.m., and the hard working support of youth groups from Atonement, Overland Park and Gloria Dei, Wichita.  Thanks everybody for your help!

Trivia Night Recap: The End Is Near!

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

At the end of Toy Story 3, who has Woody?

Trivia Night, 2011 was all about endings.  From movie endings to the end of the road, from religious endings to famous last words (who said, “I never should have switched from scotch to martinis”?), more than 100 people from as far away as Oakland made our seventh annual trivia night a success.   More importantly, over $2100 was raised for our alternative spring break mission trip to New York City.  And, thanks to the Shawnee Chapter of Thrivent Financial for a matching grant of $1000!   So, how did it all end?   Once again, the Tender Loving Christians from Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence walked away with the coveted Bear trophy.  Congratulations to TLC, and thanks to all of you!
