Spring Break in New York City
One of the highlights of the year is our Alternative Spring Break trip. Every year we spend a week in the East Village of New York City, feeding the poor and homeless, working in shelters, serving with a harm reduction center, and exploring the city. As we work hard to make a difference in the lives of others, we’re also talking about the deeper issues of hunger, homelessness, and gentrification, and how, as people of faith, we respond to these challenges.
In with all the hard work we do, we get to explore one of the greatest cities in the world, sampling the food (from pizza in Little Italy to Tibetan food to a restaurant full of nothing but peanut butter), seeing some great Broadway shows (Wicked, Who Wants to Be a Tenor?,) and exploring the fantastic museums of New York.
Other Opportunities
Besides New York, we usually take an international spring break trip. In 2009 and 2010, these trips went to Germany. For 2011, we are planning a trip to Mexico or Central America. The Germany trip was an opportunity for participants to explore our Lutheran roots and heritage.
